American Nutriceuticals - Vitamin C Powder - Supplement for Immune Support - Natural, Sugar Free -Non-Acidic - 4000mg
From Amazon.com
We started by buying this from our Registered dietitiat- about a year ago. Not sure if it is coincidence or just good product, but my sons take this daily- a scoop a day- and the last time they got sick it lasted just a couple days and that was it. Both sons got a fever and sore throat over a weekend and by Monday were pretty much recovered. It also helps with constipation. Just do not give more than a scoop a day or it becomes too loose. So it must be great stuff! My oldest just mixes it with water- tastes salty...my youngest needs to mix it with juice.Try it☺
Vitamin Basics & Tips
Understanding Vitamin C Benefits from Real Experience
The reviewer observed faster recovery from illness (fever and sore throat) in their children. Vitamin C supports immune function by stimulating white blood cell production and acting as a powerful antioxidant that protects cells. Regular intake helps maintain immune readiness.
Vitamin C and Digestive Effects
The review mentions constipation relief with one scoop but loose stools with excess. Vitamin C, especially ascorbic acid in high doses, has an osmotic effect in the gut. It draws water into the intestines, softening stool and promoting bowel movements. This explains why exceeding the recommended dose ("more than a scoop a day") caused issues.
Importance of Dosage and Form
The powder form allows easy mixing (in water or juice) and potentially better absorption than some tablets. The reviewer emphasizes sticking to "one scoop a day," aligning with general advice to follow supplement dosing instructions to avoid side effects like digestive upset.
Vitamin C in Daily Life: Key Questions
How much Vitamin C do we need? Recommended Daily Allowances vary (e.g., 75-90mg for adults, 15-75mg for children). Supplements often provide higher doses (e.g., 500mg-1000mg per scoop), safe for most but consult a doctor for kids.
Can Vitamin C prevent colds? While not a guaranteed shield, consistent Vitamin C intake may shorten cold duration and lessen severity, as experienced by the reviewer's sons.
What are good food sources? Citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruit), strawberries, kiwi, bell peppers, broccoli, and tomatoes are excellent natural sources.
Does the form matter? Powders, capsules, chewables, and liquids are common. Powders offer dose flexibility and might be easier for some to digest. Buffered forms (like sodium ascorbate, hinted at by the "salty" taste) are gentler on the stomach.
Are there risks? Excess Vitamin C (beyond 2000mg/day for adults) can cause diarrhea, nausea, and stomach cramps – reinforcing the reviewer's caution. It can also interfere with certain medications (like statins or chemotherapy drugs).
Storage Tips: Keep Vitamin C supplements in a cool, dark place (not necessarily refrigerated) in airtight containers, as heat, light, and moisture degrade potency.
